Monster challenge with Room 16 Sliverstream Primary

Last week we sent a set of instructions to room 16 at Sliverstream Primary school in Mosgiel. The instructions describe how to draw a monster. Room 16 are going to draw the monster and send the pictures back to us with a set of instructions of their own for us to draw. We are also going to write letters to each other and comment on each others class blogs.

Arrowtown Gold Trip - Monday May 28th

We are traveling to Arrowtown on Monday. Please make sure your child is at the bus stop outside the school office at 8.50am the bus will be leaving at 9am sharp. Students will need a packed lunch (no money please), warm clothes, and suitable foot wear.

Gold Trips -Parent help needed

As part of our gold topic we will be visiting Arrowtown museum, Cromwell museum, old Cromwell township, and the Kawarau mining centre. We will be visiting Cromwell on THURSDAY MAY 17TH and require parent help on this trip. If you are able to help please fill out the details on your child's permission slip or send a note to school.

ANZAC day service

Wednesday 25th Apr 2012 At 9.30am the Wanaka Anzac Day service will be held in the Lake Wanaka Centre. This will be followed by a march up to the war memorial for the laying of the wreaths. A number of Wanaka students will take part in the service as members of the school's Kapa haka group.

Life size Blue Whale

As part of our whale study room 18 today draw a life size Blue Whale. The whale measured 33 meters in length with an 8 meter tail and 4 meter long flippers. The students also cut a piece of string the same height as themselves and worked out how many times bigger a Blue Whale is than them. You can also see Nikita beside the whale's two blow holes. The class also lay head to toe along the length of the whale and found it was still longer than all of us put together.

Popcorn 4th April .50c a bag

Pod four will be selling popcorn on Wednesday. The cost is .50c a bag, please bring your money to class to place your orders. Popcorn will be delivered to class at playtime. All money raised will be donated to kate Lloyd's "coins for bricks" charity.

No music Thursday 5th April

Thursday is the last day of the term and we will be at assembly so there will be no music.

Mathletics trial

Every student today received a user name and password so they can trial the Mathletics website. Students have 24 hour access to the site and are able to practice their basic facts in real time challenges with students all over the world!

Mathletics parent meeting.

There will be a parent meeting held on Wednesday 21 March at 6pm in Pod 4 (room 16) to provide details about the mathletics programme. You can find out the benefits this technology can have to your child's maths learning. Maria Gill - author visit.

Children's author Maria Gill visited Wanaka Primary today and told us about how she comes up with ideas for her writing and how she plans writing a book. Maria has two new books out which she also talked about, the titles are " 50 remarkable Kiwis" and "The call of the Kokako". Commenting on our blog is easy and will help create discussion between home and school, consolidating learning which has happened. 1. Click on "comment" at the bottom of a post/article/story, a window will pop up. 2. Type in your comment using your first name, please use no second names or addresses. 3. If you have a google account and are signed in click "publish" otherwise you will have to sign in. 4. If you don't have a google account, click on "name/url" and just type in your first name. Students love getting feedback on their work and will be encouraged by positive comments.

A&P whale show art

We are currently studying whales and dolphins and have used our drawing strategies and pastels to create 12 different types of whale or dolphin. We have also been learning about the significance of symbols in Māori culture and have incorporated koru, which represents energy, and puhoro meaning fast movement into our artwork. You can see our art work created from start to display at the A&P show in this video.

Arrow Book Club

Issue two of the Scholastic book club is available and children have taken home a copy today. There are heaps of great deals, and topics which will encourage the most reluctant readers to open a book. If your copy of the book club hasn't made it home we have extra copies in class.
